Comment:

In this review we'll be using a CompactFlash media card for illustration purposes. Keep in mind that Dazzle and other companies make transfer products for SmartMedia, Memory Sticks, IBM Microdrive and MMC/SD as well. There are also media readers that handle up to six different media types in one unit. They're more expensive but convenient if you've mixed and matched your memory card types.

The long and the short of it is you no longer have to connect your various cameras or music players directly to your computer. This is helpful in a few ways. First, you don't have to upload your files to a specific software application. Some of these applications actually make manipulating your files harder not easier. Secondly, you will conserve battery usage. Third, the transfer rate will increase if you're currently using anything slower than a USB connection. And lastly, if you have more than one memory card you won't have to stop using your device to make transfers. Just rotate your memory cards as they become full.

Using the Dazzle is quite easy but let's run through it for those of you unfamiliar with the steps involved.

Plug in Memory Card

First, install any necessary software, then plug your Dazzle product into a USB receptor on your computer.

Next, remove the CompactFlash memory card from your camera/player and place it in the Dazzle unit. Now, when you open "My Computer" to see a listing of your computer's drives, one of those drives will be the Dazzle unit itself. It will be given a letter. In my case the letter is "H". I stuck a piece of tape with "H" written on it to remind me. Double click on your Dazzle drive letter to open its files. To remove the files from the memory card, and place them anywhere on your computer you wish, click on "Edit", "Select All", click "Edit" again and then "Cut". Now "Paste" them into a computer folder for more permanent storage.

My photos are on the H drive

Now your memory card should be empty and you can place it back in your camera or other device. Fast, clean, simple.

Dazzle also makes a portable version of their transfer units. They're small enough to carry in your pocket and you can plug them directly into a laptop. Like their bigger siblings there is no outside power source needed.
