Comment:
We've messed about with the Intel Camera Pro Pack
for years. While it was fun for a while, how much can you do with a hard-wired sound camera other than show yourself,
the ceiling, or that fabulous view of the Mediterranean from your office window?
The picture quality of Logitech's 510 isn't any better than Intel's, but - now listen up - you can sever the camera
from its USB cord and take it with you.
No, it won't compete with your Nikon, Olympus, Canon, or other reasonably talented, dedicated digital still camera.
A maximum resolution of 1.3 megapixels won't turn out 8 X 10 quality photos, few of which will squeeze into 8MB
of SmartMedia memory card.
But, you can take short films of moderate resolution. Tad rushed about like an idiot shooting New Year's greetings**
for his son stationed overseas with the Air Force. Not even the best still picture can approach a mediocre video
of a family member or friend.
The one-click video e-mail software automatically compresses .avi files to about 150KB then attaches them to an
Outlook Express message, all without thinking.
Again, it's not serious video material

because it's a compromise peripheral for a piddling USD150. However, you can stick it in an ample pocket or purse
(does anyone carry purses anymore?) and capture up to 90 seconds of low grade "footage."
Sure, many digital cameras will shoot video, but the 510 makes downloading a non-challenge. Plug in the USB cable
and one click downloads everything from the camera.
Other than its portability, the 510 does pretty much what most decent PC cameras do: turn into a Web cam, create
Web page videos, act as a motion detector, add animation, host online meetings, crank out slide shows.
Software includes QuickCam® 6.0.1 (which can be upgraded online for free), VideoWave SE ("SE" meaning
cheap), and PhotoSuite SE. We found VideoWave (cheap) to be a vital part of creating acceptable clips.
While it won't improve the content of your neighbor's message to his nephew in some distant land, at least production
values can be enhanced. Add scrolling text, in a variety of fonts and colors, create special effects, have fun.
One caution: While QuickCam allows you to add text at either the beginning or end of a video, it often results
in something approaching frames of a pegboard. If you're going to do any editing, do it in VideoWave.
Conclusion: If you can live with compromises,
live with this one.
