Comment:
Maybe you're familiar with the older sim games where you built and ran cities. I wasn't very good at it. I remember buying an expensive desalinization plant for my city even though it was located on a fresh water lake.
Nevertheless The Sims is a whole new ballgame. This time your job is to take care of a family of humans. Just like real humans they have needs and wants. Their needs include food, money, sleep etc. Their wants consist of entertainment, socializing and so on.
A bar chart at the bottom of your screen tells you when a Sim needs your assistance. For example if your Sim has to use the bathroom his "Bathroom" chart will grow red. Without your help the Sim will eventually pee on the floor. Then you've got a mess to clean up. This game can become quite involved. Try placing phone calls, have children, throw a wedding or join the army. I particularly liked it that my Sim could go on his computer to search for a job.
Some neat things about the game: A clock shows time passing and the screen alternates between light and dark depending on whether it's day or night. If your Sim turns on the radio or TV you listen to the show through your computer's speakers. If you go outside the radio is quieter than when you're inside. The Sims dream when they sleep.
You can tell a lot about the person who plays this game by the way they play it. For example, my wife was very concerned about keeping the house clean and neat. In fact she hired a maid to come in weekly.
Whereas my nine year old son thought it would be fun to set the house on fire. (That's my boy!)
Me, I just wanted to get a good game of basketball going.
