Ripping whole stations.

StreamRipper32

NAME and DOWNLOAD LINK: StreamRipper32

DESCRIPTION: Rips Internet MP3 files by the carload.

SIZE: 364KB, self-executing.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Most Windows operating systems.

COMMENT: StreamRipper32 lets you download music from hundreds of Internet MP3 stations. Choose a genre such as Top Ten, Classical, Comedy, Country, Jazz, Rock, or other, click "Refresh" for a list of stations, then double click the one you want. Hit the "Rip" button and, if all goes well, your hard drive will start filling up until it runneth over.

One thing that sets StreamRipper32 apart from other ripping software is it automatically creates directories for each station and labels each piece of music as a separate file for easy editing.

Unlike Napster-type software, you obviously cannot pick and choose specific downloads. But, unlike those peer-to-peer services, the quality of your downloads should be uniformly good.

The main drawback is you cannot monitor what you're ripping - unless you also have Winamp, another free program:

Winamp

NAME and DOWNLOAD LINK: Winamp
DESCRIPTION: Digital audio/video player.
SIZE: 2.2MB, self-executing.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Windows 9x, 2000, NT 4.

Highly rated, sophisticated software, the Winamp player features a ten band graphic equalizer, spectrum analyzer and oscilloscope, shows music author, title, bitrate, sample rate, time, etc. Controls include position slider, balance, volume, equalizer, playlist, shuffle and repeat.

Support is built in for MP3/MP2, MIDI/MID, WAV/VOC, CDA (compact disc audio), WMA (Windows Media Audio). Plug-ins offer even more formats, e.g., Liquid Audio, AU/SND, AVI, QT, MPEG, ANIM.

Finally, there are a whole mess of skins, from 3D to TV themes, for those to whom looks are everything.

Team these two freebies with a CD-R or CD-RW and crank out a sound collection that's uniquely you.
