NAME and DOWNLOAD LINK: McAfee AVERT Stinger

DESCRIPTION: Virus Removal Tool

SIZE: 1.09 MB

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Windows 98/ME/2000/XP

COMMENT: "Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations."

McAfee AVERT Stinger currently detects over 50 common viruses, Trojans and their variants. It's a small, self-executing file so it uses minimal resources. Run it from the download or save it in a handy location for repeat uses. It's small enough to save to a floppy disc or a USB drive for use on other infected systems.

Stinger comes configured to scan the C drive. To scan other drives or directories use the Add, Browse and Remove buttons. Stinger shouldn't cause any conflicts with your antivirus software.

McAfee AVERT Stinger by default repairs any infected files it finds, but other handling options can be selected by clicking the Preferences button. You can set all of Stingers scanning options here.

If Stinger finds a virus it can't repair, try turning off the system restore in Windows XP or Me and run Stinger again. When the scan is done don't forget to turn it back on. Save your scan results by clicking on file and selecting "Save report to file".

The list of viruses Stinger can detect and clean, not surprisingly, can be found under the List Viruses button. This version currently detects 55 viruses. The list can be useful if you know what's ailing an infected system and and are looking for the right removal tool.

McAfee AVERT Stinger might seem like a minor antivirus tool with its tiny definition profile, but it can be quite valuable if your computer is already infected by one of the more common viruses it removes. Sometimes even with the best protected a system can get compromised and Stinger might be the additional remedy you need. McAfee doesn't offer any support or guarantees for Stinger, but any feedback can be sent to Stinger@avertlabs.com. You'll want to check periodically for updated versions that remove additional viruses. A well rated, up to date antivirus software suite is a must, but just in case, keep a copy of McAfee AVERT Stinger close by.
