COMMENT: We are addicted to Microsoft Notepad. It's a small program (52KB) that opens quickly, lets us rapidly un-format fancy text so it's usable elsewhere, is a great way to make notes about programs and graphics and store them in the same folders, is the speediest way to read and modify .txt, .ini, .log and other text files. Though still popular among those who insist on creating Web pages from scratch, and still the preferred application for many Windows files, it's seen few improvements over the years. Designed as a replacement for Notepad, metapad offers a lot more in a program that's only 24KB larger. It has find/replace, undo/redo, revert, case changes, automatically "finds" both up and down, lets you open another window from the current one, calculates file size, remembers recent files, displays active hyperlinks, is not limited to 64KB of content, has a toolbar, lets you chose "external viewers" - programs into which your current text is automatically copied. And, you can select from a variety of fonts. That's not all, but unless you write code you're probably not interested. If you never use Notebook, don't bother with metapad. Otherwise, we think you'll find there's no contest.
