Adios, .wav files.

Lame 3.89

NAME and DOWNLOAD LINK: Lame 3.89 (Click "Encoders.")

DESCRIPTION: MP3 encoder/decoder.

SIZE: 649KB, self-executing.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Windows. (Also DOS, MacOS, Linux, SunOS.)

COMMENT: Why keep choking your hard drive with .wav and .aif sound files? Stop burdening your friends with long downloads. Convert those space hoarders to slim MP3 files that run just fine on RealPlayer and Windows Media Player.

Lame 3.89 sports all kinds of technical documentation and file options. It even contains another program called RazorLame, which is what you'll be working with.

Unless you're a geek, ignore most of it. LAME OptionsWhat you should pay attention to under "Lame Options" are the "Bitrate" and "Mode." They govern the quality and size of your results.

For voice files you can chose a low bitrate such as 8 or 16 kbit. Music will sound better at higher rates, but file sizes increase. Unless you require stereo, stick with a mono setting.

If you have lots of files that need converting you can drag and drop them into the RazorLame window. Have a few scattered in a folder? Drag the whole folder over and the appropriate files will be inserted.

Next, click "Encode." Unless you've made some option changes, the converted files will wind up right next to the old ones in the same folder.

Got some MP3s your friends can't play? Decode them to .wavs.

Our
Pocket Sound Page is a hotbed of .wav files you can convert. A fine example is the very funny "All right, all right, I apologize, I'm really, really sorry, I apologize unreservedly..." It chews up 310KB in it's current form. The MP3 version is a svelte 57KB converted at 16 kbit, mono, and sounds just as good.
