COMMENT: While more and more free Internet services close shop or start charging, eFax still offers free incoming faxes and voice mail. Of course, they may not be free to the senders -- we were assigned a toll number several states away. We receive several faxes each month, and send almost none, so free eFax is a good, convenient deal for us since we don't need a fax machine or a dedicated phone line. And because they come through the Internet, you can retrieve your faxes even when you're on the road with your trusty laptop. Once you're sent a fax it's emailed to your computer where a small program allows you to view it, along with some ads. If there are multiple pages you can opt to show thumbnails in the left pane. You can also rotate the images, zoom, and print. While the free version doesn't offer optical character recognition (turns fax into text) it's possible to export to a .tif file readable by OCR software you may already have. Saving a fax document with the viewer allows you to forward it for reading by anyone with the above mentioned minimum computer requirements. Voice mail is available by email or phone via the same number. In the former a sound file is attached, while the latter requires calling your assigned number which, if it's long distance, makes little sense. Get an answering machine. For USD9.95 per month eFax Plus provides a better choice of phone numbers, the ability to send faxes, and OCR. If nothing else, consider signing up for free eFax before it, too, goes to the land of lost freebies.
