COMMENT: "Adobe® Digital Editions is an engaging new way to read and manage eBooks and other digital publications. It is built from the ground up as a lightweight rich Internet application (RIA). Adobe Digital Editions works online and offline and supports PDF- and XHTML-based content as well as Adobe Flash® SWF for rich interactivity."

Adobe Digital Editions is a great way to start your summer reading. You probably won't be using it at the beach, but it will improve your computer reading experience with its simple interface, clear type and images, smooth scrolling, enhanced zooming and page sizing, and a digital library with unlimited capacity. Adobe has streamlined the reader functions with a small eBook reader application that's optimized for eBooks and magazines without all the extra functions needed in Acrobat and Adobe Reader.

Over 150,000 retail and many free eBooks at retail sites and loaners from public library sites are available for use with Adobe Digital Editions. Downloaded eBooks from sites that support Adobe Digital Editions are automatically added to your library and ready for reading. Adobe Digital Editions keeps you informed of return dates for borrowed eBooks. It also automatically imports your current bookshelf and you can easily import other PDF files by dragging them to the reader or selecting the Add Item from the Library menu.

All your eBooks go to a general library which can then be arranged into different bookshelves. Adobe Digital Reader has four smart bookshelves All(for everthing in your library), Borrowed, Purchased and Recently Read. Go to the Options button to create as many new bookshelves as you wish.

Adobe Digital Reader has two views, Library and Reading. The Library is where you organize and search your eBook collection. View thumbnails of eBooks or a list that can be sorted by different headings like title or author. The Reading pane obviously for reading, but also searching, bookmarking and printing. You can search by individual words or whole phrases.

Documents and eBooks can be viewed multiple ways, as a double page, a single page, fit to width of the reader or a custom fit for zooming to any size. You can smoothly scroll through text using the small arrows or a wheel mouse and turn whole pages with the large arrows. (ePub documents not being fixed documents like pdf files, can only be viewed in two font sizes and don't scroll smoothly.)

Adobe Digital Editions bookmarking feature lets you create bookmarks which can be organized in the Library view for easy document navigation and notations. As with any good book you'll want to pick up where you left off, Adobe Digital Editions automatically keeps your place.

A great read is mostly about the content, but Adobe Digital Editions shows that the experience can be improved on by a good presentation. To find free content go to Adobe Digital Editions Sample eBook Library and The New York Public Library as well as other public libraries. Links to retail eBook vendors can be found at Adobe's eBookmall. Adobe Digital Editions automatically updates itself insuring the latest features and security. Although Adobe Digital Editions currently supports PDF/A and OPS(Open Publication Structure) files, its capabilities should expand with future updates. With its tiny footprint, user friendly controls, rich media environment(Adobe Flash support adding publications' ability to integrate audio and video), and partnering with Sony for their portable readers, Adobe Digital Editions should be well positioned as the future standard of digital readers.
