200+ Computing Tips
Computing Tips

Speed Up A Slow Running Computer
Incorrect virtual memory settings may be slowing your computing experience. Let Windows manage your computer's virtual memory. Go to "Start," "Control Panel," "System," click on the "Advanced tab," then the "Settings" button under "Performance," again select "Advanced," click on the "Change" button under Virtual Memory, select "System Managed Size," then "Set" and "OK." It's easier than it sounds.

Use Vista's Windows Easy Transfer
If you upgrade to Windows Vista you can transfer the following files and settings from a Microsoft Windows-based computer to a Windows Vista-based computer: • Files and folders
• E-mail settings
• Contacts and messages
• Program settings
• User accounts and settings
• Internet settings and favorites
• Music
• Pictures and videos

What To Do If Your Notebook Won't Boot
Try disconnecting the power, remove the battery, flip the notebook over, and unscrew the plastic panels covering the hard drive and memory sockets. Notebooks get knocked around and components can be jarred loose. Try removing and reseating the memory modules. Another option is to just rap the laptop on your desk.

Password Protect Word 2007 Documents
Click on "Logo" in upper left. Click on "Prepare" and then "Encrypt Document." Type in your password twice and you're set.

Find IE7 Problems By Managing Add-ons
To find out if your IE problems are with the Add-ons go to the "Start" button, "All Programs", "Accessories" , "System Tools" and then select "Internet Explorer(No Add-Ons)". If the problem stops go to the IE menu bar and click "Tools", "Manage Add-ons", "Enable or Disable Add-ons" and try to find the cause by stopping and starting each Add-on.

Narrow Google Search Results By Subtracting Terms
Get better search results by excluding terms with a minus sign. For example: apple -tree -fruit -iphone -mac.
